Course summary
This course is about biologically inspired algorithms, their relationship to living biological intelligence and the nature of consciousness itself. Some modules overlap with the main computer science degree, so you get the same solid grounding in the fundamentals. You can specialise in speech recognition, language processing or robotics.
Computer science with AI is the study of machine intelligence, including bio-inspired algorithms, their relationship to living intelligence and the nature of consciousness itself. Put your learning into practice with the opportunity to work in industry for a year.Position yourself at the leading edge of humanity’s exploration of what it means to be alive, and the creation of artificial intelligence.Beginning with the same foundation as our Computer Science MComp, the degree gives you a grounding in the fundamentals, before encouraging you to specialise in speech recognition, language processing or robotics.Develop AI applications in a team project for an external client in your second year, in your third year specialist modules which cover subjects such as speech and text processing, machine learning and bio-inspired robotics give you scope for creative and intellectual exploration. In your final year you'll continue with this specialised AI theme, you'll get the chance to work alongside our research staff as part of a group research project. And you’ll have the option to participate in Genesys Solutions – our student-led software development organisation – throughout your final year, solving customer’s problems, using agile software engineering and lean startup practice. You'll not only graduate with technical skills of a computer scientist, but also a solid team player, effective communicator and system designer.
Why study this course?-
Industrial placement year- you have the option to either study abroad for a year or spend a year working in industry, gaining real-world experience and connections. Get inspiration from companies who join us on campus for employability fairs and networking sessions and from our students who have done placements at companies including Deloitte, The Walt Disney Company, and Samsung SDS Europe.-
Research collaboration- our Darwin module lets you engage in a substantial piece of group research, culminating with the possible production of a paper, as well as a final conference-style presentation.-
Professional skills and group work- professional, communication and presentation skills help to create more employable computer scientists and software engineers.-
Specialist teaching facilities- you'll have access to the latest hardware, software and operating systems, plus high-spec graphics computers and a robotics arena in our dedicated computer labs in The Diamond.-
Support throughout your degree- our dedicated student welfare advisor is available to provide support, for example, if you are feeling down, overwhelmed or struggling to adjust to student life.
