Course summary

The application of physics to the treatment and diagnosis of medical conditions is a rapidly expanding and exciting field of study, vitally important to the detection and treatment of many medical conditions and diseases. This BSc Physics with Medical Physics has been developed in conjunction with the University Hospital of Wales. Specialised modules are given by professional medical physicists from Cardiff Universitys School of Medicine. The course is designed to give you a thorough grounding in physics and a broad introduction to the many specialist areas of medical physics. In the final year you will carry out a research project at the University Hospital of Wales where particular fields of interest are Doppler ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, electrical impedance tomography, radiation physics and body composition measurements You will be part of a friendly and welcoming department currently housed in the Queens Building complex, which contains a wide variety of purpose-built laboratories, lecture theatres and computing facilities. Accredited by the Institute of Physics (IOP), this course aims to give you a sound training in physics and medical physics in preparation for a wide variety of employment, including industrial or academic research and development, medical physics, education and or other sectors which require a practical, numerate and analytical approach to problem solving, such as business, finance and government. Career prospects - In the latest survey of graduate employment 92% of the Schools graduates reported that they were in employment and/or further study within six months of graduation. We provide a range of support to help our students to find the career opportunities that suit them best, such as a Careers Adviser who is located part-time in the School, on-site careers fairs and employer visits. We also aim to prepare our students by providing them with the skills they need to succeed in obtaining jobs and feeling confident in their chosen workplace. Employers include UK and international universities plus a range of organisations such as Rolls Royce, European Space Agency, NHS, National Instruments and Barclays.

To include Maths and Physics. Applicants taking Maths without Physics will also be considered normally subject to achieving a grade A in Maths. You will need to pass the science practical element of the A-level if this is part of your programme of study.
